I hesitate to even use the word expectation because it conjures up the idea of return on investment or immediate results. Adding a rhythm of being still, retreating, and spiritual direction over time will be reflected in your life. It is not easily measurable by the standards you may be familiar with however those you spend the most time with will see something different in you and so will you.
As you attend to the condition of your soul through spiritual direction and retreating, you'll discover what's really important to you and look at your calendar, your bank account and your closest relationships through a different lens. Recognizing and responding to the activity of God in your life will change your priorities over time.
In our fast paced culture, including regular rhythms of spiritual direction and retreating will slowly change the pace of your life. You may not notice the change for some time however just like anything you do consistently and persistently, you and those close to you will notice the difference and encourage you to continue.
"Knowing God and knowing self are interdependent. Neither can proceed very far without the other. We come to know God best not by looking at God exclusively, but by looking at God, and then looking at ourselves--then looking at God again"
David Benner
